    • If you're worried about your fuel pump I'd change that first... Nothing like being full boost with no fuel.

      • Jeremy - I don't have to worry about volume, I have to worry about pressue. If under boost I fall below 1600 psi I'll need to upgrade the internals of the pump.

Tom - we were talking about duty cycle on this platform. Well, they've reached it @ 400-500 whp. Injectors are maxed.

        • Not very big injectors then ,stock... Less than 300cc, eh?

Lower pressure = less volume. Is the reason they need to run such high pressure due to the direct injection?

          Jeremy

P.S. I should say, lower pressure= less flow which results in lower volume. In my opinion, two thugs could fix this. Larger injectors or a way to limit the return line, like an FMU.

I'm pretty sure an FMU isn't capable of being retrofitted. And what other reason would there be to have such high fuel pressures? Also, what injectors can you think of that can handle 400-500 stock? While maintaining 1600-1700 psi fuel pressure?

                • Diesels do it every day... Where did you think the direct injection idea came from? Mazda didn't design it...

An FMU just goes on the return line. If it has a return system, it will work. It's primitive but it does the job. Pressure= pounds per square inch... When you lessen the area while maintaining volume, pressure increases.

                    • Mazda did things the way they did from the factory to keep things running rich under boost so as to not have a chance at running lean. That's all. But you all probably know that.

                      • All/most companies do that with boosted cars. The extra fuel pressure is to over power the compression of the motor... I think. Makes sense to me.

                        • You are correct Jeremy. The additional pressure is to overcome compression...If the injectors were going to spray during the intake stroke there would be no need for the excessive fuel pressure, because they'd only be seeing vacuum.

                            • Want to run the Cougar? Maybe it will blow up on me haha It's been taking my beatings quite well actually. Still not sure if I'll put the time into fixing the intake gaskets. In the back of my mind I'm praying when I take the intake off I'll find a collapsed lifter and that will fix my knock...

                              • With the weather being as cold as it's been and the fail of FWD, it wouldn't surprise me if you beat me with the total lack of traction I have. Would be a fun race though!!

I thought you were going to junk it based on the body, and the frozen door handle fiasco? lol...I totally hear you on the gaskets though. All you can do is *hope*...Then again, even if you fix it mechanically it's still poopy in terms of the body, right?
