      • What exactly is meant by "* Escort front upper strut mount fits 2nd gen Probe (MX6/626 implied; 5/8" lower drop) Front is the only end interchangable. Rear are not." upper strut mount? is that the entire strut mount or just a piece of it? i need to buy these so any help would be appreciated!! and any part numbers as well..and what year escort as well?

        • Well lets see if I can contribute anything new I didnt read the whole thread so forgive me if I repeat anything.

The 2nd gen Probes (SE and PGT) came with 28MM front bars and so did many 93-97 626's. The MX6 and the rest of the 626's came with a 26mm front bar.

Depending on your needs they can be swapped either way.

The 3rd gen Protege is based on the GE/GF chassis and so many parts can interchange or be made to work.

The front subframe looks to be a lot lighter and will bolt straight up. But you will need to use the Protege LCA's.

The Protege front sway bar is about 20mm and swaps straight in. It can help to bring the rear end around in an autoX/track car.

The rear bar can be as thick as 17mm and the 98+ 626 bars are either 14mm or 16mm.

Protege lateral links are tubular and much more rigid than the MX6/probe stamped links.

5 lug 3rd gen protege brakes are the same as mx6/probe brakes but the 4 lug and 2nd gen brakes are different despite whats reported earlier in the thread.

The Mazdaspeed Protege brakes fit as well as 98+ 626 brakes all Mazda 6 /3brakes and all mazdaspeed 6 and 3 brakes.

The upper strut mounts for the Escape/Tribute SUV's are a stronger and safer captured design than ours and is a stiffer mount (ie less rubber to flex) but has a round hole. So you'll need an impact to instal most likely.

The intake manifold from a 98+ V6 626 bolts right on and is a better design than ours but you need a Mazda Millenia 2.5L throttle body to make it work.

Stock late model (4th gen I believe) ford taurus/sable 3.0 exhaust manifolds are a better design than the 1st gen Probe 3.0 and fit directly. I believe they need a custom Y pipe though. Same goes for the Ford ranger/Mazda B3000 aftermarket headers.

For the 1st gen 2.2 motors you can use the rockers from the 8 valve engine to replace the stock rockers. The 8V ones are solid instead of hydraulic and can be reved higher. The centers need to be honed out and re-centered to fit the F2 rocker shaft though.

The FE DOHC pistons will fit the F2/F2T engines and bump the cr up to the 9:1 to 10:1 range depending on the piston and supporting work done.

SR20 and 4G63 pistons are said to fit to similar effect too.

The FE3 DOHC head WILL fit the F2/F2-T block but the oil drain back passages will either need to be blocked off (aluminum slug pressed in then welded) or they can be blocked then drilled and a tube inserted/pressed in. You then route drain lines to the oil pan just like a turbo drain.

From the 98+ V6 626 sedan: The ECU,harness, sensors and other various equipment can be swapped to trade distributor for DIS and the VAF for a MAF batch fire for sequential and to eliminate the pre cats on OBD-II cars legaly.

Solid tappets can apparently be run on hydraulic cams problem free.

The MX3 K8 cams are slightly more agressive than the DE cams but not quite as agressive as ZE cams.

The MX3 GS and all final generation 929's used the JE 50 VAF used with the KLZE. The MX3 GS ECU is also a decent stand in for a genuine ZE ECU.

98+ 626's sometimes came with chrome interior door handles that swap with 2G MX6 handles.

              • The power steering seal kit for the 2nd gen is supposedly the same as some infiniti, honda passport and issuzu through the 90-2000 years. I got the kit and was going to take notes on the pump when I went to the JY. At a quick glance the mounting holes on the front bit may be different, but I thought I'd throw it out there if any one wants to look also. I'll also edit if the seal kit fits ok with the bearing number when I ever get around to it. For 20 bucks I'd rather rebuild the darn thing .

                • Im wondering if anyone has done a build on a ford probe with a V8 in it a buddy of mine wants to slap a 302 in one and see what she does but i know that it requires a hell of alot of reinforcing anyone know the weakest points on the cars that need to be beefed up, other websites and pictures will be helpful. This doesnt have anything to do with crosspolinating parts that will work its more along the lines of getting things that wont work to fit right in.

                  • you'd almost need to channel the body on a frame to do that

then there's the dozens of rwd v8 drag probes out there. even a 1st gen one here in my own town that competes at byron drag way.

but when it comes to the v8 swaps, this one is my fav. very clean, and went out of there way to keep as much OEM parts as possible.

so obviousely, its more then possible. cause many have done it. you can stick with the stock car, and work with that, or do a full frame. your choice. both have been done.

                          • More to add

Apparently late Mustang brakes are a near bolt on deal!

A member on MX6.com has done a conversion with Mustang Cobra 13" dual piston PBR rotors and calipers.

The center hole on the Mustang rotors is too small and needs to be bored out, stud pattern is the same and offset seems to workout too.

A "small" amount of clearancing is supposed to be needed to fit the caliper/bracket to the car.

This caliper (not the bracket, just the caliper) is the same as has been used on the 84-96 Corvette and is the very same caliper used by Baer brakes in many of it's kits.

I'll be trying the base 12" dual piston brakes used on most if not all 2000+ base Mustangs and GT's.

Ironicaly I already had a set of the calipers since this caliper (PBR again) is used on the 98-02 GM F body, the caddy CTS, GTO, Lincoln LS and many other american cars.

This set id destined for my 90 T/A though, I'll be getting a set off of a wrecked 3.9L Mustang or even a Lincoln LS if the caliper brackets are the same. If so that would mean the newes Mustangs could be donors as well.

Big brake kits for the mustang are potentialy swappable too so keep your eyes open.

The 12" version should fit under 16" wheels just fine and you should be able to step up to the C6 Vette calipers (using the stang brackets/rotors) that are pressure cast rather than gravity cast like the rest.

                            • Do the brakets on the calipers fix directly? or do you have to fab them up? thats an amazing up grade if all you have to do is bore the center hole on the rotors

                              • The original modder said a small amount of clearancing was needed on either the caliper or bracket but that it was an otherwise direct bolt on.

I'll be doing it with the newer style PBR's so I'll be able to let everyone know about that one specificaly.
