  • First Panda Express post of 2020

Few years back I bought a white 93 PGT and started working on it.

This car got saved from a junkyard, the owner bought it from another guy who let it sit for 10 years, and he realized he was in over his head on the issues with the car so I scooped it up for a cool stack and drove it home, only overheated twice and ran from the cops once

What was supposed to be a simple two day job turned into a two week triage and resurrection. It needed SO MUCH WORK I almost named it Karen. I did the timing belt, water pump, cleared ALL 9 CEL codes holy crap. It got a new alternator, AC compressor, pretty much anything you would do on a car that was never replaced after 150k miles. I had to rewire the audio and fix all of the issues with the previous owners trying to half-ass stuff. All the speakers were blown so I spent the money for an Alpine system. It was supposed to stay relatively stock and end up a restoration project, but then I was like screw that I wanna go fast, after doing the Dragon for the first time so without further ado, I present to you the PANDA EXPRESS, the day I bought it. It looks a lot nicer in pictures than it actually is. The reality is I have seen examples in the junkyard that looked better.

    Muffler? What muffler?

    Timing belt and water pump

AFTERMATH. Also did the AC compressor, lines, wiring, alternator, coolant flush, tons of leaking lines and a whole bunch of small stuff under the hood.

Dad and I cleaning the dirt off, this is the last white car I ever own

Some decent /p/hotos cleaned up. Nikon Df ftw

This was actually a little later after a lot more work but I included it here in the /p/ section

SuperSquid, always working on everyone else's cars. He legit threw this whole thing like 20 feet after we wrestled it out from under the car.

PRETTYYYYYYY. The valve cover gaskets were dumping more oil than the Deepwater Horizon so I bought the Fel-pro kit, and while I had the manifold off, hey, we should paint the VC, and while we have all this off, that rear header will be really easy to get to, let's do the header install

Major junkyard score! While cruising the JY for a 626 rear swaybar, I came across a Mazda 6 with slotted front rotors and newer calipers. 90 dollars for everything. Bolted right up. This is a little later after SS lines and EBC Yellowstuff pads. This made a night and day difference, the old stock brakes were shot up like the Soviets trying to cross the Volga in Stalingrad in 1942. Mazda 6 rotors are considerably larger than the old Probe rotors which are designed to fit in a 14" donut wheel on the 4-cyl base model, which I also own one of.

For a very short time it had the MAF swap using parts from an OBD2 Millenia sedan.

After all of this work was done, I drove it to Tennessee the next day for vacation and did this, and that experience pretty much solidified the extent to which this project would reach, no longer would it be just a good daily driver with some balls

So much that I bought another Probe, and yes it's a manual Vulcan which is unobtanium, this is going to be another project for much later on in the future, as I found it had other issues secretly hidden from me that revealed themselves in a torrential Missouri downpour, yay. Rust is a weight reduction, right?

Squid doing the battery relocation wiring

Now the real fun begins. It also has an Innovate LC-2, which Squid helped weld up the bung for on the collector. Also, Chinese collectors are junk, we could barely stick our fingers through the flexpipe but that will change in the future.

TUNING IS NOT A CRIME. Also peep the wooden shift knob a la Porsche Carerra GT, Squid makes them.

I actually bought an old IBM T30 Pentium 4 to tune it with, because serial ports, period correct and also most importantly, the T30 is an industrial laptop made for stupid temperatures and all the cooling inside is beefed up so it can handle track days. And Thinkpads are cool.

OBJECTS IN MIRROR ARE LOSING (or waiting in the turn lane)

Have wanted one of these forever, the diameter is a little smaller than I expected but it will make ingress and egress easy later on when I cage it and put racing seats in

This is for later, actually in a couple weeks, thanks Summit

No project is complete without NAWWWSS and a Timmy Turbo plush doll

Now a bunch of people are wondering, "why is it called the Panda Express?"

This is why. Also, truck driving FTW. I got a load up to Massachusetts to pick these up.

These don't fit by the way, yet but I'm going to try to make them work.

This is a carbon fiber hatch, one of 15 made for this car. Who does custom Lexan windows?

Now the fun part, getting it home. I rode around for a full week like this, during CVSA Inspection week, which is basically screw a trucker week where the DOT comes out of the woodwork and busts our balls over dumb stuff to capitalize on fines, most truckers call it the Revenue Roundup. Every day I went across the scales like this if a DOT had seen this I would have been done for sure. To sleep at night I had to move it forward in the cab and wrap the back of my leg around the edge of the hood, it's only stupid if it doesn't work.

Rear EBC 98+ 626 BBK, EBC Yellowstuff pads

Squid wrestling with the brake line, we never got the old one off, any ideas outside of cutting it and putting a new one in?

(We wrestle this bastard brake line off later on)

255/40/ZR17 Firehawk Indy 500s are on. I have a 3mm spacer in the back to make everything even. It rides like a go kart now. I'm sure the tires rub above 100 but they wont rub the coilovers

A ton of stuff got done.

              Power steering cooler

Oil cooler, filter relocation kit. It still has a couple leaks but I'll get those sorted out

3 gauge pillar pod, with mechanical oil pressure and oil temperature, turbocharger vac 0-30psi

It uses filters for an 86 Ford Bronco and now I am up to 8qt oil capacity now, and I haven't even put a turbo on it yet.

                Whoops

I thought the oil lines were backwards, turns out they weren't and I switched them anyway, the anti-drain back valves on the filters kicked on and the top end was welded together now. A redesign on parts of the oil cooler setup is also in the works, with different AN lines in some places and returning functionality to the stock oil pressure gauge and OPSU that the car came with. If I had added that redundancy in the initial design I would have seen zero return oil pressure and this would have been avoided.

New motor in. For the sake of time, let's just fast forward to 2020, and imagine a PRD shroud there because it stayed on for 5 minutes and vibrated off, I still have it just have to remount it

This is a full 0-mile KLZE with rebuilt heads. The bottom end is NOS block with ZE pistons in it. It has the Boundary oil pump and it's shimmed so 60psi idle.

It has full AWR mounts now, including the passenger one, not pictured here. It has new CV axles.

The wasted spark system is working and uses Bosch parts from Audi, an ignitor from an A4 1.8t and a Ferrari F50 coil, it's triggered with a 36-1 Millenia wheel and controlled by Megasquirt.

We have fixed a lot of little things. The condenser had a hole in it, so I got an OEM Ford NOS one, not a Rockauto Chinese replacement. SCORE.

The AC fans weren't coming on because of a wiring issue at the relay connector. That has been rectified and the AC is now super cold. But the biggest upgrade was these big beefy boys right here. Corksport 13" big brake kit, for Mazdaspeed 6. They are a direct bolt on for Probe and I think the SS lines that comes with them are also a direct fit for Probe. I had a custom set made for the Probe to use Mazda6 calipers.

Unfortunately, those sick RPF1s don't fit the Corksport kit, at 17", so now I am back at the fork in the road, do I go 18" RPF1 or do I find a set of BBS LM's in 18x9.5 +22 and sell my soul and kidney to pay for them? Probably will end up with the RPF1, I can get them for 1000 with tires if I'm careful.

For now though, RX8 wheels with a 5mm spacer and new cheapo Sentury tires, I'm not putting 595 RS RR's on curbed and scratched (and horribly plastidipped) RX8 wheels.

Now all the fun stuff waiting in boxes to go on

Found a set of AWR coilovers and Addco swaybar. They need helper springs to work right on this car, those will be in soon.

Exile Cams, these are 216/363. Pretty mild compared to 272s but it will let me idle with the AC on.
