  • YES! Yes we will!

On a positive note, got Heather's van all back together last night. Got fresh plugs, wires, new serpentine belt, new head gasket, and new upper/lower IM gaskets installed, along with fresh oil/coolant.

Freshly machined head before I put it on...

Motor waiting to accept head....mmmm, head...
    http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...s1/GM_V6_3.jpg

Just a quick shot putting shit back together...Damn cell phone has to be PERFECTLY still or it blurs the pic. Meh...
    http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...s1/GM_V6_4.jpg

Almost there, just need the upper intake...
    http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...s1/GM_V6_2.jpg

Boy, installing those coils/wiring on the rear head was fun! In any case, starts up and runs like a CHAMP now...Idles perfectly. There's a minor coolant leak coming from the heater core hose, which runs to the t-stat housing. I've gotta take off the TB to see the leak better, but I blame my Dad since he threaded that in. Threads are probably dirty...Other than that, there is ONE vacuum line that I can't figure out...It runs from the rubber elbow JUST before entering the TB to....somewhere. It's a preformed line, and I know the 90 degree elbow HAS to go into the rubber boot just before the TB, so the other end has to be somewhere relatively close. Right now I just have it plugged, and it seems to run fine. Worst case scenario, I can go to the yard to look at one that's intact. I'll see if I can post a pic up of the line tonight...Jeremy will probably know where it goes. The 90 degree elbow fits directly into the top of the boot, pre-TB.

New compression numbers on the front bank (completely dry motor) are as follows...

    Cylinder #2 - 145psi
    Cylinder #4 - 142psi
    Cylinder #6 - 145psi

I'm sure the numbers will come up slightly once the motor warms up and gets some oil circulating through it, but that's a hell of a lot better than 110psi in cylinders #2 and #4.

    • The PCV line runs up and over the intake and goes into the intake manifold after the TB but I know the line you're talking about, It's just far too early for me to remember where it goes right now...

      Jeremy

P.S. I believe it goes to a solenoid on the back of the motor, under the coils. It plugs into a fitting with a red locking mechanism on it... here is a pic of the general location of where it runs: http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/y...8/IMG_1124.jpg

          • Wow, must be head gasket season or something...

Temperature's not bad outside. I think it's supposed to rain later, though.

            • And now soon I have to put a motor in the land rover... Apparently the block is cracked?? I'm still unsure how I could drive it for 2+ months and have no problems then 3 weeks after my buddy gets it back the block cracks.

              Jeremy

P.S. The plus side of both of these is they should give me enough cash to pay off my credit card before it starts racking up interest charges lol

                Jeremy
It probably developed a hairline crack when you had it, then got worse as condensation (or any liquid that may have had access to the part of the block) got in. Either that, or your buddy got it and beat the piss out of it for 3 weeks, then got unlucky! Where did the block crack?

                  • One can only hope! It never seems to go that way for us, though. Well, not counting that one time when it was beautiful...that I spent in your spare room....with hungover Heather. Guaranteed the weather would've been shit if I actually got to run.

Thanks Hiney. It ducks behind the EGR valve pretty quickly, so it's tough to see it in that pic...that's the trouble with the pics in the Haynes manual as well.

I'll look for that red locking mechanism you're talking about though.

                            • Got Heather's van totally done last night...runs like a raped ape. She's like "it's so much more responsive now. It has way more get up and go with less effort."

To which my response was "yeah, it's amazing what happens when you have good compression, and the motor's actually firing on all cylinders..."
