  • JDM KL Millenia swap into my Protege5 thread

Hey guys. I'm Evan. I bought a JDM Millenia curve-neck KL for my beloved Protege5. I've been doing a lot of research here on PT and have had a lot of help from a few members on Mazdas247. I thought I could start a build thread for my motor here since the members here know A LOT about KL motors. Any advice, opinions and help would be greatly appreciated.

    I currently have in my garage;
    JDM Millenia KL motor
    JDM MX-6 5 speed tranny
1994 PGT engine harness and the engine harness that came with the motor
    KL36 ECU and JE-50 VAF
KLK1 ECU that came with the motor

Here's a pic of the motor so you guys know I'm serious. haha

I have a few questions that maybe you guys can help me out with?

-First of all, which ECU/MAF should I run on the Millenia motor? I figured I would run the stock JDM KLK1 ECU that came with the motor but I don't currently have a MAF for that ECU. Or should I run the KL36 and JE-50 set up? But wouldn't the VRIS points be off?

-Second, how many O2 sensors should I be running? I will be catless and not have to pass emissions check so that's not a worry. One swapped KLZE Protege is just running 2 O2 sensors in the headers.

I guess that's all the questions I have for now. Thanks in advance for your help!

is that just like a crinkle black out of a can o nthe VC?

obd1 cars only have 2 o2's one in each header

and from waht i read JE-50 ECU and VAF has given the best output N/A at least

        Thanks for the info, KL.

Yup, just the standard engine enamel high-temp wrinkle paint I picked up at Autozone. I just cleaned the valve covers and throttle body really well, sprayed the crap out of them, let them dry a bit, then tossed them in the oven at 200* for an hour. They came out pretty well.

I would try the kl36(klze ecu) since its a jdm millenia. But since you have a 1994 harness your fans will always be on. A kl36 searches for a third coolant sensor like a 1993 ecu would. If it bothers you that much you can wire them to a switch.

Also with a kl36 ecu and je50 you won't have a check engine light. So you will need another 1994 ecu handy if you want to use the check engine light.

Thanks, mate. Would it be possible to switch between the KL36 and KLK1 ECU's using the same harness? Is there a different harness that would be better for my motor? I don't mind buying another harness if it will work the best.

I would like to try both out to see which one the motor "likes" better on the dyno.

If that "jdm millenia" is a "millenia ze" then your best bet is to use the kl36(klze ecu) and je50.

kl36 ecu is an obd1 ecu.

the klk1 ecu... how many spots for plugs does it have? and you need to figure out which vaf or maf it uses if you dont already know.

Well, that was one of my many questions I have not found an answer to. Is there such a thing as a curve-neck KL31 flat top piston 200hp KLZE? But that's a whole different headache...

The KLK1 harness and ECU have 4 ports for the electical connections and my KL36 ECU (and 94 PGT harness) has 3. And I'm still trying to figure out which MAF or VAF to use for the Milly ECU. As far as I know, all the Milly motors use a KL47 MAF. But I'm still researching that to know for sure or not...

your right... the milly needs a kl47maf......

the kl36 uses the je50 vaf and the od1 94 harness works perfect other than the fans turning one which you can wire to a switch

all he would have to do is swap the water neck to one with the extra sensor. since he has the motor still out, it would be very easy to do. hell, you can even just drill and tap it if your lazy.

He has a 94gt wiring harness, there is no plug for a 3rd coolant sensor on that harness.

Good plan on the swap. Exact same as mine. I'm on a '95 MX3 harness with a JE50 VAF, My fans just run full time. I'm going to install a switch though, as in the winter it takes forever to warm up.

Glad to see you made it on over here. This is a really cool swap, and I check this board a lot more than Mazdas247, lol.

are you sure its a true ze and not just a millenia motor? whats the head and cam stamping? And btw, the straight neck is 197hp and the curve neck ze was 191/2(?) iirc. and the US millenia was 170
